Music theory for music producers

Beat Music theory for beginners

• Music theory may sound complicated at first, but once you break it down, it becomes much easier to understand.

• It includes important topics like scales, chords, note names, chord progressions etc. — all of which are essential for any musician or music producer.

• While learning these concepts is not too difficult, applying them correctly on real instruments like piano, guitar, or violin can take a lot of practice and time.

🎹 Good News for Music Producers!

If you’re a music producer, you don’t need to be a trained pianist or guitarist to make great music. That’s because Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) can play the right notes for you — as long as you give them the correct instructions.

To do that, you just need to understand 5 basic concepts of beat music theory:

🧠 5 Key Concepts of Music Theory:

    • Understanding Music Notes.

    • Scales and Keys (like C Major or A Minor etc.)

    • Major and Minor Scales

    • Major, Minor, and Diminished Chords

    • Creating Chord Progressions for Your Songs

These concepts are explained using Ableton Live, but don’t worry — they are universal and work the same way on any DAW or even a real piano.

📊 Free Music Theory Chart

To make it easier for you, we’ve created a simple music theory chart that shows:

  • The notes of any major or minor scale

  • The matching chords in that scale

We’ll show you how to use this chart step-by-step in the upcoming video tutorials.

🎼 No Instruments Needed!

  • The best part? You don’t need a piano or guitar to learn this. You can:

  • Use any DAW with a piano roll (like Ableton Live trial, Logic Pro Trial etc.),

  • Or download a free mobile piano app from the Play Store or App Store.

  • If you’re using a mobile app, just follow along with the notes shown in our videos to train your ears.

1. Understanding the Music Notes

🎹 In this video, we’ll explore the piano roll in a DAW, while learning the following music fundamentals:

  • Names of white and black keys on both the piano roll and an actual piano

  • Understanding sharp (#) and flat (♭) notes

  • What are octaves and how they work

  • The difference between tones and semitones

2. Song Scales / Keys

Every song follows a certain pattern of notes that makes it sound right — this pattern is called a scale or key.

Scales give a song its overall mood or emotion, and here’s an easy way to understand the most common ones:

  • 🎉 Major Scales – These sound happy, bright, and cheerful. You’ll hear them in feel-good songs, upbeat tracks, and party music.

  • 💔 Minor Scales – These sound more emotional, sad, or serious. Most emotional or romantic songs are based on minor scales.

  • 👻 Diminished Scales – These create a feeling of tension, suspense, or fear, and are often used in horror music or dramatic scenes.

While these are common guidelines, they’re not strict rules — a sad song can still be made using a major scale, and a happy or energetic song can be created in a minor scale.

Scales help guide the emotion, but creativity and context shape the final mood of the song.

For example:

  • Tears in Heaven’ by Eric Clapton is in a major scale but feels emotional,

  • ‘Rolling in the Deep’ by Adele uses a minor scale but still sounds powerful and up-lifting.

As a beginner, it’s best to follow these general guidelines to get a strong foundation. Once you’re confident with music composition and production, you can experiment with these ideas freely.

3. Major and Minor Scales

We will focus on Major & Minor Scales that are widely used in western music and understand how we can train our ears for them.

4. Major, Minor & Diminished Chords

What Are Chords?

  • A chord is created when a group of notes is played together — it adds harmony, depth, and rhythm to your melody or vocals.

  • Chords help shape the overall feel and mood of a song, and they often follow a repeated pattern to support the main tune.

  • Most basic chords are made up of three notes, known as a triad.

🎼 The Four Main Types of Chords Are:

  • Major – bright and happy

  • Minor – emotional and serious

  • Diminished – tense or mysterious

  • Augmented – dreamy or suspenseful

Among these, major and minor chords are the most commonly used in Western music.

👉 Now , we’ll learn how to easily build major, minor, and diminished chords using simple step-by-step formulas.

Layering Major Chords in Pianos (The 3-2 formula)

5. Developing Chord Progressions

🎶 Understanding Chord Progressions – The Heartbeat of a Song

  • Chord progressions are simply a sequence of chords that give your song structure, mood, and flow. They form the foundation for your melodies, harmonies, and even the rhythm of your track.

•You can create a great-sounding song using just 4 chords from a particular scale — and many of the world’s biggest hits have done exactly that!

✅ Simple Example:

Let’s say your song is in the C Major scale.

You can use just 4 chords like:

  • C Major – A Minor – F Major – G Major for the Verses

  • Then switch it up to C Major – F Major – A Minor – G Major for the Pre-Chorus

  • And for the Drop or Hook, try C Major – E Minor – D Minor – G Major

This adds variation and emotion to different parts of your song.

🎯 But remember:

  • Using different progressions for different sections is a creative choice — not a rule.

  • You can stick to one progression throughout or change it based on the vibe you want.

🎵 To Summarize

  • Understanding major and minor scale patterns, along with the chords that belong to those scales, is the key to making music that sounds right.

  • When you pick a scale for your original song — whether it’s a major or minor scale — just make sure you use only the notes and chords from that scale.

  • This simple rule helps you stay musically correct and avoid clashing sounds.

  • If you learn and apply these basic music theory concepts in your songs, remixes, or mashups, you can be confident that your music will sound professional, polished, and in tune every time.
