⚙️ Ableton Preferences Setup

To access preferences:

Go to Live > Preferences > Audio

✅ 1. Driver Type

  • Mac users: Select CoreAudio

  • Windows users: Select ASIO (If not listed, download ASIO4ALL for free and select it after installation)

✅ 2. Audio Input & Output Device

  • If you don’t have an audio interface, select:

    • Built-in Microphone for Input

    • Built-in Output for Output

  • If you have an audio interface, select it from the dropdown menu

✅ 3. Sample Rate

  • Determines how many samples per second are captured (more = higher quality)

  • 44,100 Hz (44.1kHz – CD-quality audio (recommended for streaming, radio, etc.)

  • 48,000 Hz (48kHz)  – Higher-quality audio, often used in video/DVD projects

👉 Choose 44.1 kHz for general music production unless you’re working on audio for video or film.

🎼 Track Types in Ableton Live

🎧 1. Audio Track

Used to place audio files like loops, recordings, or samples (WAV, AIFF, MP3, etc.)

To insert:
Right-click > Insert Audio Track

🎹 2. MIDI Track

Used to create music from scratch by programming notes, chords, or melodies. MIDI doesn’t contain audio—it sends instructions to a virtual instrument.

MIDI lets you control:

  • Which notes to play (e.g., C major chord)

  • When they play (timing)

  • How long each note lasts

  • How soft or hard each note is hit (velocity)

To insert:
Right-click > Insert MIDI Track

🎛️ 3. Return Tracks

Also known as Effects Tracks, these are used to apply common effects like Reverb, Delay, or Distortion etc., to multiple tracks at once.

You can control how much of the effect is applied using the “Sends” knob on each Audio or MIDI track.

To insert:
Right-click > Insert Return Track

  • Contains actual sound recordings or samples

  • Should be in lossless formats like WAV or AIFF

  • Drag onto Audio Tracks

🎹 MIDI Clip

  • Contains only musical note data (not sound)

  • Controls how the instrument plays (notes, velocity, pitch, etc.)

  • Drag onto MIDI Tracks and assign an instrument to hear it
